How to Lay or Fit Artificial Grass in Your Lawn or Garden ? : The Complete Guide

A residential lawn adds artistic value to your home, serving the exterior with a touch of warmth and nature. Its plants, climbers, and even succulents represent life and help in brightening up the vibes of your home. Laying artificial grass in these gardens will ease up your extra work of maintaining and cleaning them. It is the most practical solution for lawns nowadays, as its easy installation is supplemented with convenient maintenance.

It becomes the catalyst to add vigor to an otherwise dull lifestyle. A scenic outdoor space for relaxation is created with a fake grass garden, with climbers and hanging baskets potted with beautiful plants that subtly make your day without actually doing much.

If your garden hosts artificial grass, it comes with even more benefits as artificial grass cost is usually cheaper and needs a lot less care and concern than natural grass does. However, its installation must be done very carefully by following the steps in the complete guide given below.

Things to Know Before Laying Artificial Grass

Implements to Be Used

A good amount of equipment is required for installing artificial grass for the garden, whose base must be well prepared beforehand. A turf cutter, shovel, Stanley knife, and planks for compacting are the essentials in the process. The joining tape and adhesive, along with a tape measure, ease the process of measuring the length and width of the grass to be installed by either using ground pins or galvanized nails.

No Installation Over a Soil Base

Artificial grass cannot be directly installed on a soil base as the soil is prone to weather-induced wear and tear very easily, leaving one with a base that is compromised over durability. Artificial grass is thus ideal to be laid on top of concrete, as well as decking, as long as they are even and drain water appropriately.

Preparing an Underlayment

A fake grass garden can only look perfect if its base is made strong enough onto an existing hard base such as concrete or tarmac. Installing a layer of foam, granite, or cork underlay beneath the artificial grass will provide extra cushioning and drainage to the grass. This ultimately makes sure that your artificial grass is of a great standard all around the year.

The Installation Process: Steps for laying artificial grass

Artificial grass can be simply laid by using the required tools and following the given steps:

Step 1: Planning

Before starting your installation, a thorough inspection of the garden area where the grass is supposed to be placed must be taken, and a plan for the same must be drafted. At this stage, the electricity cables and water pipes must be carefully designed to be below the digging depth. Remove large stones, bricks, or other obstructions on your base along with the turf.

Step 2: An Edging System

Installing an edging system will help if there are no perimeters for the grass to butt up against.  Using a hammer and piece of wood, knock the edging into the soil, leaving around a suitable measurement exposed.

Step 3: Making a Sound Base

An underlayment with either granite or concrete must be applied for a resilient base preparation. A smoother surface can be created by using a piece of timber for dragging the sand or dust across the application area.

If you are using sand for the underlayment, the depth should not be higher than 20 mm, with leveling out larger imperfections across it by using hardcore.

Step 4: Weeding

Application of a weed membrane over the area, once it is compacted, will prevent weed growth whilst allowing water drainage.

Any unnecessary membrane from the edges must also be trimmed off at this stage. For joining purposes, overlapping the edges to attach them with gaffer tape will help.

Step 5: Laying the Fake Grass Garden

Once the above steps are completed, you are ready to lay your grass. Unroll it over the area without disturbing the weed membrane. After positioning, the excess artificial grass must be trimmed. The trimming should be continued by changing the blade every 3-5 meters for a smoother finish as the blade would remain sharper.

Helpful Tip: Having the pile direction running towards the house will give the best look from the windows of the house.

Step 6: Furnishing

Now the final touches are left! To furnish the fake grass garden, apply some kiln sand to the artificial turf, which can be done using a blower or stiff brush.

This step is very crucial to ensure the most natural-looking finish to your turf. The sand dressing must be done on a dry day of the week so as not to let it wash away.  The day should also coincide with the day of the lawn installation.

Helpful Tip: Brushing the pill before, during, and post the process will yield better results.

Step 7: Maintenance

The false grass is not maintenance-free. Everyday wear and tear of the turf calls for maintenance in which the quality and longevity of it remain intact. Therefore, following a planned routine of clearing the grass debris, rinsing it regularly, and cross-brushing of the attached sheets will help artificial turf achieve a long and useful lifespan.

With these tips, you will surely succeed! By simply performing such tasks, the process of laying artificial grass becomes an easy job. Maintenance regularly will ensure your lawn is clean, lush, and green along with being odor-free. You can add to the life of such false grass through them.

A healthy-looking garden is systematically cleaned and maintained. Artificial grass is the trendiest way to modernize and add a style statement to your dwelling. Artificial grass costs reasonably and provides benefits that you can avail yourself of for a longer period.
